The problem: no GPS fix at the moment it matters

GPS works with extremely weak satellite signals that come straight from space. As soon as a vehicle is under a concrete deck, in an underground garage or in a shielded dispatch hall, there is no view of the sky and reception drops out entirely. The building acts as a Faraday cage for the satellite signal.

For emergency services, that is a concrete risk. When an ambulance, fire engine or response vehicle leaves an underground bay, the GPS receiver has to start from scratch: search for satellites, build a fix, determine position. That takes tens of seconds to several minutes — exactly while the vehicle is already on its way and the dispatch and navigation systems can't yet see it on the map.

With an indoor GPS solution, the vehicle already has a valid position before it leaves the garage. Navigation and tracking are active immediately.

How indoor GPS works

An indoor GPS system (also called GNSS re-radiation or a GPS repeater) captures the real satellite signal with an outdoor antenna that has a clear view of the sky — on the roof or in an open spot. That signal is brought inside via a controlled amplifier and re-radiated there by a small indoor antenna, in exactly the zone where it's needed: the garage, the bay or the dispatch.

The GPS receivers in the vehicles receive the same real satellite signal indoors that they would get outside. That way they already build a valid position fix inside. The system re-radiates only the existing signal — it does not generate or falsify any position.

Correct and within the rules

GPS/GNSS re-radiation is technically sensitive and regulated: the signal may only be emitted within the intended zone and must not cause interference outside. Mercuron designs every setup with the necessary shielding and tuning, so the solution works reliably and stays compliant. We always discuss the application and conditions with you in advance.
